Sea Change Opens New Café at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens

6 March, 2025

Sea Change CIC is delighted to announce the opening of its second café at the beautiful Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens.

After months of hard work and careful renovation, the team from Sea Change in South Shields is ready to welcome their first customers on Saturday 8th March.

This new café, overlooking Winter Gardens’ stunning tropical backdrop, will bring their famous ‘Cheesa’ selection to Sunderland for the first time ever, alongside an inclusive menu featuring vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options – ensuring there’s something for everyone.

Beyond its menu, Sea Change is a social enterprise café on a mission to empower neurodiverse adults across the North East with the skills, confidence, and experience they need for sustainable employment.

Much like the original café on Ocean Road, this second location keeps that mission at its heart, and thanks to the support of Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens and Sunderland Culture, it has also created 8 new job opportunities in the process and a promise of creating 10 more within its first year.

Since opening its doors in 2019, Sea Change has supported over 100 neurodiverse individuals through supported employment opportunities, with 20 successfully trained into paid hospitality roles and five securing un-supported paid employment thanks to the skills and experience gained on its ‘Sea Change for Employment’ programme.

Visitors to the new café can expect the same warm, welcoming atmosphere and high-quality food and drinks that have made Sea Change a community favourite.

Sarah Farrell-Forster, Founder of Sea Change CIC said:

“We are thrilled to announce the opening of our second café, located in the heart of the city at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens! This exciting expansion not only allows us to bring our delicious offerings to a new audience but also furthers our mission of providing more supported employment opportunities for the neurodiverse community in Sunderland.

By growing our presence, we can empower even more individuals with meaningful work, skill development, and a supportive environment where they can thrive. We can’t wait to welcome you to our new location and create an even greater positive impact.”
